Our story

It Started With One Van and Eleven Kids Willing to Work

In 1925, our founders’ grandparents purchased a single moving van and began offering moving services to families across the greater Pittsburgh area. There was no fleet, no franchise and no shortcuts — just a family willing to put in the work. All eleven of their children pitched in, and the values that built this company were set from day one: show up, work hard, and take care of people’s belongings like they’re your own.

That family business grew through the decades, but it never stopped being a family business. In the 1960s, the sudden loss of a family member brought a new generation into leadership sooner than expected, and father and son ran the company together through the years that followed — adapting with the industry while holding on to the same standards. We joined the Allied Van Lines family in the 1950s and have been a proud agent ever since.

By 1995, leadership had passed fully to the third generation, who acquired the business from their siblings and carried it forward through economic ups and downs. When the company faced the loss of another family leader years later, that same commitment to excellence — and a refusal to cut corners — kept Allegheny Valley Transfer moving forward.

Today the company continues to be guided by the same philosophy: if you’re going to do something, do it right, and never stop learning how to do it better. A hundred years later, we’re still the same kind of company our founders were — just with a much bigger truck.

“To be successful, you must truly enjoy and excel in your chosen profession.”
— A philosophy passed down through three generations of Allegheny Valley Transfer leadership

Our drivers are the face of Allegheny Valley Transfer on moving day. Here are two you’re likely to meet.

Steve Pollak, veteran driver and owner-operator with Allegheny Valley Transfer

Steve Pollak

Steve has been part of the Allegheny family for more than 50 years. He started as a coffee runner in his early teens, became a local dispatcher and eventually an owner-operator. Steve has moved families all over the USA and has come across every type of furniture and situation there is. Off the road he enjoys time with his wife and grandkids.

Patrick 'Boomer' Pollak, Allegheny Valley Transfer driver

Patrick “Boomer” Pollak

His name is Patrick, but friends and family call him Boomer. When he’s not on the road, you’ll find him at home with his wife and two kids.
